अहमदाबाद. नरेंद्र मोदी ने 26 दिसंबर को लगातार चौथी बार गुजरात के सीएम पद की शपथ ली । अहमदाबाद के सरदार पटेल स्टेडियम में शपथ ग्रहण समारोह के लिए भारी भीड़ जुटी है। शपथ ग्रहण समारोह में बीजेपी के तमाम सीनियर नेता पहुंचे हैं। जेडी(यू) के किसी नेता को छोड़ कर एनडीए के कुनबे के सभी नेताओं ने समारोह में शिरकत की। हालांकि बिहार से भाजपा नेता सुशील मोदी इनमें नहीं हैं। कहा जा रहा है कि बिहार के मुख्‍यमंत्री नीतीश कुमार को न्‍योता ही नहीं भेजा गया है। एमएनएस प्रमुख राज ठाकरे और शिवसेना नेता उद्धव ठाकरे भी पहुंचे। एआईएडीएमके नेता जयललिता भी मोदी के शपथ ग्रहण समारोह में शरीक हुईं। मोदी की मां भी समारोह में मौजूद रहीं। (150 करोड़ के बुलेटप्रूफ ऑफिस में शिफ्ट होंगे मोदी)

2001 में केशुभाई पटेल के हटने के बाद मोदी पहली बार गुजरात के मुख्यमंत्री बने थे। (अहंकारी लेकिन ईमानदार हैं मोदी?) इस बार मोदी का शपथ ग्रहण समारोह पहले के मुकाबले हाईप्रोफाइल रहेगा। सूत्र बताते हैं कि नीतीश कुमार के दफ्तर के मुताबिक उन्‍हें मोदी की ओर से शपथ ग्रहण समारोह में आने के लिए कोई चिट्ठी नहीं मिली है। यहां उल्लेखनीय है कि एनडीए के मुख्य घटक दल जेडी(यू) के नीतीश कुमार ने अभी तक मोदी को हैट्रिक विजय पर बधाई नहीं दी है।

शपथ ग्रहण समारोह राष्ट्रीय स्तर पर खुद की छवि उभारने का एक मौका है। समारोह में हर राज्य से बीजेपी के अलावा वहां के किसी क्षेत्रीय दल के मजबूत नेता को आमंत्रित करने की रणनीति पर काम किया गया। राजनीतिज्ञों के अलावा फिल्म स्टार, बॉलीवुड एवं गुजरात फिल्म जगत के लोगों को भी आमंत्रित किया गया। फिल्‍म और उद्योग जगत से जुड़ी कई हस्तियां यहां पहुंचीं।

गांधीनगर। विधानसभा चुनाव में भारी बहुमत से लगातार तीसरी बार जीत का परचम लहराने वाले नरेंद्र मोदी ने बुधवार को लगातार चौथी बार मुख्यमंत्री पद की शपथ ली। इस ऐतिहासिक क्षण का गवाह बनने के लिए दो सौ से ज्यादा वीआईपी मौजूद थे। इसमें सबसे ज्यादा आकर्षण के केंद्र राज ठाकरे और उद्धव ठाकरे रहे। इसके साथ ही बिहार के उपमुख्यमंत्री सुशील मोदी और तमिलनाडु की मुख्यमंत्री जे जयललिता ने भी समारोह में शिरकत की।

New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), India’s principal opposition, appointed Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi to lead its election campaign committee for national polls due by May next year, despite internal differences.
“Elections are challenge for any political party. BJP is also taking it as the biggest challenge,” party president Rajnath Singh said on Sunday at a televised press conference. “I declare him (Modi) as the chairman of party’s election campaign committee. We hope that BJP will emerge as alternative to Congress in the next elections.”
Singh was accompanied by leaders of opposition in Parliament Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley while making the announcement in Panaji, Goa, where the party’s national executive is meeting.
Many top leaders of the Hindu nationalist party were absent at the two-day Goa conclave, including stalwart L.K. Advani, indicating that the BJP was divided on Modi leading its election campaign.
In his first comments on the new role, Narendra Modi said the BJP will work out a strategy to oust the ruling Congress party from power and resume the work left by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He attacked the UPA government, saying it has taken the country for granted and was “shameless” despite several corruption allegations, policy paralysis and failures on various fronts like internal security, economic situation and foreign policy.
Modi also said in a tweet that Advani has given his “blessings” to him after Singh’s announcement. “Spoke to Advaniji on the phone. He gave me his blessings. Honoured and extremely grateful to receive his blessings.”
Modi’s appointment to head the election committee is one step short of his ambition of becoming prime ministerial candidate of the party in the impending Lok Sabha election. “The president just gave into the pressure of cadre and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (progenitor of the BJP),” said a party leader who attended the meeting. He spoke on condition of anonymity.
“The way he is being elevated and party cadres are rallying around him, it is now clear that Modi will be the prime ministerial candidate of the BJP,” said N. Bhaskara Rao, chairman of the New Delhi-based Centre for Media Studies. “Still, he needs to keep leaders of his party and allies together.”
The decision puts Modi, 62, in direct fight with Rahul Gandhi, scion of the Nehru-Gandhi family, who will take the Congress into the elections, due by May 2014. Gandhi, son of the Congress president Sonia Gandhi and assassinated Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, was appointed as his party’s vice president in January. Both parties have yet to formally declare their choice for prime minister.
“This (move) will create a positive atmosphere and will definitely help in 2013 Chhattisgarh assembly elections and 2014 general elections,” Chhattisgarh chief minister Raman Singh said.
Still, some of the BJP’s allies in the National Democratic Alliance are opposed to Modi being projected as a prime ministerial candidate. The leaders of the socialist Janata Dal (United), including Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar, have expressed concern that the nomination of Modi may anger Muslims who accuse him of failing to stop the riots that targeted their community in 2002. More than 1,000 people died in the violence, most of them Muslims.
“The appointment of Modi will further divide the BJP as some leaders including Advani are opposed to his elevation,” said B.G. Verghese, an analyst with the Center for Policy Research in New Delhi. “It would also weaken the National Democratic Alliance, the opposition grouping, as leaders like Kumar are opposed to Modi’s prime ministerial candidature,” he said.
Reacting to the development, the Congress moved to highlight the “apparent divide” within the BJP. “Modi’s appeal is limited to Gujarat. We have seen the hollowness of his campaign in Karnataka elections. He is popular only among people, who like communal politics and communal personalities. But this kind of politics goes against the ethos of India. Common people do not appreciate the communal politics of people like Modi,” party spokesperson Shakeel Ahmed told the Press Trust of India. At the same, he said it was “internal matter” of BJP whom to make their campaign committee chief or parliamentary board head.
But allies such as the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and the Shiv Sena welcomed the appoinment.
SAD leader and Punjab deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal said the decision would be “catalytic” in the alliance’s “victory march” in the next general rlections. “We welcome the appointment of Narendra Modi... We have expressed our good wishes to Modi,” Shiv Sena spokesperson Sanjay Raut said.

Greed, they say, is not always bad. And if the end result of this greed pertains to a good cause, then one doesn’t need to cajole his conscience either. But people often get lost somewhere in the middle and lose sight of their focus.

Narendra Modi, without taking into considerations the comments and appraisals of his political rivals and critics, is a political idol without a shadow of doubt. The nature of respect he commands throughout Gujarat is awe-inspiring. And after the end of Vajpayee era, he is the lone warrior standing tall in the NDA camp, often giving sleepless nights to the UPA government. He can retain the chair of CM of Gujarat as long as he wishes and presumably there is no one in the state who can give him even a close fight. But that’s not the point. The point is, can he be projected as a potential PM candidate? And even if he fights against all the odds and gets there, would he be able to do justice to the position which millions can only dream of?

One needs to weigh all the pros and cons of this possible situation. There is no denying the fact that Narendra Modi is obsessed with the power he gets to enjoy as the Gujarat CM. He is a total control freak who wants even the movement of a shade of grass in his state to be under his authority. He would never ever want to let go of his position for a lesser cause. But going by the recently concluded ‘Sadbhavna’ fast in Ahmedabad, he has silently put forth his desire. And the report by the US Congressional Research Service (CRS) has acted as an icing on the cake. But the report has acted as a double- edged sword. According to the report, Gujarat under Modi has the most effective governance amongst all the states in India followed by Bihar under Nitish Kumar. Now Nitish Kumar is the one person on the current political circuit who can command the NDA against Modi, if he ever wishes so. Even Modi knows that if the current UPA government is voted out of power in next Lok Sabha elections, Nitish Kumar is the only person who can come between him and his dream.

Now there arises the sense of insecurity on Modi’s part. Another not-so-encouraging feature of Modi’s political personality is his ways of handling religious issues. Even when most of the Muslims and other Minority groups are claiming to be satisfied under Modi, there is still much left to be done in this area. And secularism is one of the fields where the Bihar CM can score some brownie points over Modi. Though he claims that he has risen above religions and castes, he is still very much the poster boy of ‘Hindutva’ and RSS. Even though Modi seems to be doing nothing wrong these days, he is still pretty much haunted by his alleged involvement in Godhra riot case; and as is truly said- ‘Corpses are not buried in politics. They are kept alive so that they can speak when the time comes.’ So no prizes for guessing that Modi will have a very tough time ahead maintaining a balance between his image of a staunch enthusiast of Hinduism and keeping Muslims content, if becomes the next PM.

But no matter how much we try to bring out the negativities in him, we cannot miss the charisma he radiates. He is the finest manager of Indian media amongst all leaders. He has excellent organisational capabilities, dynamic personality and can motivate even a corpse to move with his powerful words, to name a few of his qualities. And the business stalwarts of the country (read Ratan Tata, Mukesh Ambani etc) seem to be in awe of him. The fact that GDP growth rate in Gujarat has been 11.05% over the past few years (a number that has been well publicised by the Gujarat government) as against the national value of 9% is something one cannot overlook. The looks of the power hubs of the state, Gandhinagar, Ahmedabad and Surat have been turned upside down, leaving the other cities of the country gasping for breath. Gujarat is quickly turning into an economically and industrially ideal state, something which other states will look up to as an example. If we consider the aspect of a leader’s willpower to bring positive changes in his/her constituency skipping the other attributes, then Narendra Modi undeniably stands out amongst his counterparts in other states, maybe even leaving behind his arch-rival, Nitish Kumar. But then again, there are a whole lot of other facets which need to be taken into consideration when we are talking about the most powerful face of the world’s largest democracy.

If the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in 2014 see a shift of power from the reigning UPA coalition to the NDA (chances of the third front forming a government are very glim), then this debate will turn into an unavoidable situation. But then instead of writing columns and airing programs on televisions pondering over who should be the right choice, we should better let the country and its people decide. But the truth being the truth, Narendra Modi certainly enjoys a clear lack of competition inside his own bloc.

The bottom line is, like most of the realistic political situations, it is extremely tough to take a side (only when someone is not paid to do the same). The sine qua non for having a luxury to choose amongst suitable candidates is their availability, and the truth is that we don’t have too many viable options in this regard. Do we?
