Samsung beats Apple, Nokia as world's largest handset maker

Published April 27, 2012
SEOUL '   "  Samsung Electronics became the world's biggest mobile handset vendor for the first time ever in the first quarter of 2012, capturing a quarter of the global market and overtaking struggling Nokia, according to data released Friday by London-based research firm Strategy Analytics.

In the quarter ended March, the South Korean electronics giant shipped 36 percent more handsets than a year earlier and also outsold archrival Apple in the smartphone segment. Samsung's smartphone shipments more than tripled on robust demand for its Galaxy handsets, the research firm said.

Samsung held a 30.6 percent share of the world's smartphone market, while Apple followed with a 24.1 percent share, the report said.

In the first quarter, Samsung held a 25.4 percent share of the global mobile handset market, shipping 93.5 million units worldwide, compared with 68.9 million a year earlier, the data showed.

Nokia held a 22.5 percent share as its shipments dropped 24 percent to 82.7 million units in the quarter.

The latest shipment numbers follow stronger-than-expected quarterly earnings this week from both Samsung and Apple.

Earlier Friday, Samsung posted a record net profit in the first quarter, usually the most difficult period of the year for technology companies, largely helped by brisk sales of its mobile devices.

Samsung said its net profit for the three months ended March 31 rose to a record 5.05 trillion Korean won ($4.44 billion) from 2.78 trillion won a year earlier.

The result was higher than the average 4.42 trillion won net profit forecast in a poll of six analysts.

Samsung's record-high net figure was largely due to robust sales of its smartphones and a phone-tablet hybrid product, called Galaxy Note, helping it overcome slack demand globally. Technology companies usually see slower sales in the January-March period as consumers take a breather following the busy year-end holiday period.

..Samsung overtakes Nokia in cell phone shipments
ANI '   "
London, Apr 28 (ANI): South Korean mobile maker Samsung has overtaken Nokia to become the world's largest maker of mobile phones, according to a report.

Research firm Strategy Analytics revealed that in the first quarter of 2012 Samsung shipped 93 million mobile handsets phones compared to almost 83 million by Nokia.

The firm said its IT and mobile communications division, which manufactures the smartphones, made an operating profit of 4.27 trillion won during the period, as revenues in the division surged 86 percent from a year earlier, The BBC reports.

Meanwhile, Samsung is facing stiff competition from rivals such as Apple and Taiwan'-based HTC.

Apple, which said earlier this week that it sold 35 million of its iPhones in the first quarter, is expected to launch a new version of its handset later this year.

According to the report, another area of concern for Samsung is likely to be its chip manufacturing unit, which is facing slow global demand for personal computers

Samsung's memory-chip division saw its profits slide by 54 percent during the first quarter when compared with the same period a year earlier. (ANI)

Samsung unveils Galaxy S III smartphone with face, voice recognition

Samsung has launched its Galaxy S III smartphone, which it hopes will help solidify the company as the leading challenger to Apple and its iPhone 4S.

The new handset, with a whopping 4.8-inch screen and an 8-megapixel camera, was unveiled at a slick launch party in London on Thursday, complete with a backing orchestra.

Billed by Samsung as having been "designed for humans," the phone features voice and eye-recognition technology that the company hopes will set the handset ahead of its rivals in the crowded smartphone market.

Samsung has overtaken Nokia as the world's best-selling mobile phone maker, and Juniper Research reported Tuesday that Samsung also overtook Apple in smartphone sales in the first quarter, in what it described as "increasingly a two-horse race."

The new Galaxy handset, which runs the most up-to-date version of Google's mobile operating system -- Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich -- recognizes when a user is looking at it, and ensures the screen doesn't go dark while it has eye contact.

S Voice technology -- Samsung's equivalent of Apple's Siri -- enables users to wake up their phone with a simple voice command. And voice recognition goes further -- saying: "Hi Galaxy ... picture," for example, opens the phone's camera app, and saying "cheese" takes a picture. Face-recognition software then identifies Facebook friends within images, and prompts the user to share them.

Samsung -- a sponsor of the Olympics -- revealed it will be sending devices enabled with mobile payment technology to the 2012 games in London.

Chris Hall, editor of technology website Pocket-lint, said he was "pleasantly surprised" by the new phone.

"When you compare it to the nearest rival it feels like they have pulled off a bit of a trick," he said. "They have put some effort into software innovations, particularly the eye recognition. The voice recognition feels like a reaction to Siri on the iPhone, but I don't know many people who actually talk to their phones."

"I think the success of the Galaxy S II proves people want something different that isn't an iPhone, and I think the S III is a valid successor to the S II." Samsung said the phone will be available in Europe on May 29, followed by launches in Asia, Africa and Latin America. A 4G version will go on sale in North America, Japan and South Korea in the summer.

Samsung did not announce what prices on the phone are expected to be.
