WhatsApp to soon launch free voice calling feature: Reports

ibnlive 1/9/14
New York: If media reports are to be believed, mobile messaging service WhatsApp is set to launch a free voice calling feature for its 600 million active users.

Recent changes in the interface of the app suggests the feature is coming soon.

"The leaked images of the upcoming user interface shows that the app has been enabled with other language translations which will be displayed at the time a person receives a call via WhatsApp," a report on thefusejoplin.com stated.

The translation feature available in the latest version of WhatsApp has made it clear that the voice calling plug-in is on it's way.

While the voice calling feature is all set to be released on WhatsApp, there is no update if there is going to be a similar feature on Facebook, it added.

WhatsApp has witnessed a 15 per cent rise in its traffic since the announcement that Facebook is acquiring the service.

WhatsApp has crossed 50 million active users in India alone.

Free WhatsApp voice calling: How to get it on your phone in 2 easy steps
IBNLive.com
@ibnlivetech

New Delhi: The voice calling feature that WhatsApp had been teasing and testing for some time now is finally going mainstream. The WhatsApp voice calling feature is enabled in the latest build of the WhatsApp Messenger that is now available for download for Android devices on Google Play (version 2.11.561).
But WhatsApp isn't activating voice calling feature right away. Desirous users will still need an invite, in the form of a WhatsApp call from any other WhatsApp user who has the feature activated on his/her app.

The steps involved fairly simple:

WhatsApp isn't activating voice calling feature right away. Desirous users will still need an invite.

1. Go to Google Play and download/update the free WhatsApp Messenger app.
2. Ask any other WhatsApp user you know with the voice calling feature activated to call you via WhatsApp.
Following the call you should find the WhatsApp voice calling feature activated on your phone. You will now see a new 'Calls' tab to the left of the Chats and Contacts tab on the WhatsApp home screen.
While there have been unofficial APKs floating around promising the feature, but it is advisable that users install the app from Google Play or the official WhatsApp website.

WhatsApp calling has finally arrived. WhatsApp users will need to update to version 2.12.5 (or above) from Google Play. If the update is not available directly from Google Play, users can get the latest version from www.whatsapp.com/android/  The calling feature will automatically get activated after updating the app. Both caller and receiver has to update to the latest version to use the calling feature.
WhatsApp calling allow users to call other WhatsApp users for free. However, a minute of WhatsApp call costs around 0.15 MB to 0.20 MB of 3G data This means a 5-minute call costs around 1MB of 3G data. The call quality on 3G networks is decent but on 2G, there is a considerable amount of lag. Also, on 2G, a minute of WhatsApp call costs around 0.35MB which is surprisingly higher than 3G.
Without mobile internet plans, the standard data rates for most operators are 4p /10 KB (3G) and 10p / 10 KB (2G). This roughly translates to Re 1 per minute of WhatsApp call on 3G and Rs 2.50 per minute on 2G network.
The new WhatsApp calling interface is similar to the regular call UI in Android smartphones. Call records are automatically saved. During a WhatsApp call, if the user gets a regular call on his smartphone, then the WhatsApp call runs in background for a few seconds and gets disconnected on its own.
The calling feature will arrive for iOS and Windows Phone later.
