Written by Syed Khalique Ahmed | Ahmedabad |  Published on:May 22, 2015 4:41 am With 40 per cent to the teaching posts are lying vacant in all 16 Gujarat engineering collages, the state government has increased the teaching load hours of faculties by two hours in a week. While the workload of principals has been increased from existing four to six hours, those of professors from six to eight hours, associate professors from 12 to 14 hours and assistant professors from 16 to 18 hours. It includes teaching in classrooms as also practicals in laboratories. Speaking to The Indian Express, Commissioner (technical education) Anis Mankad said that it meant only 24 minutes extra a day with five-day week in colleges. “So, this is not any heavy load keeping in view that the time of two hours has been divided over five day,” said Mankad. A senior professor in LD College of Engineering, oldest engineering institute of the state, said that their duty hours were from 10.30 am to 6.10 pm and hence, increasing the teaching workload by another half-an-hour did not matter. He said that teaching was totally a different profession in which the teacher had to study and update his own knowledge first before coming to the classes. “It is not like an administrative job where you don’t require to open books or read at home,” explained the professor requesting anonymity. But the commissioner said that in colleges located in remote areas, teachers and faculties left early and did not stay up to 6 pm. “We are now monitoring their presence through video cameras installed in classrooms and laboratories,” said Mankad.
