Safe transport: 275 schools get notice for skipping meet

LUDHIANA: District Education Officer (DEO), secondary, Paramjit Kaur Chahal has issued notices to 275 schools affiliated to the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) for not attending the two meetings related to the Safe School Vahan Scheme held last month.

There are as many as 364 PSEB-affiliated schools, out of which only 89 schools have attended meetings conducted by district transport officer Anil Kumar Garg and Khanna ADC Ajay Kumar Sood on December 5 and 18, in which the Safe School Vahan Scheme was reviewed. Out of 364 schools, 48 are aided schools and only seven on them had attended meetings.
Chahal said, “This kind of attitude shows lack of school’s seriousness about safety of students. We have given two weeks time to the schools to reply. If any school fails to give a reply till February 4, we will write to the PSEB to take required action against the schools.” The schools had been directed to provide data of the number of students who travel by school-owned and privately owned vehicles. The school bus drivers must have a driving licence and registration certificate. The schools had been told to abide by the Supreme Court guidelines and the Motor Vehicles Act-1988.
