Punjab SC panel asks govt to ensure reservation rules

CHANDIGARH: The Punjab state scheduled castes commission has issued directions to the state government to ensure that in case of non-availability of candidates from the sub-categories of reservation, such as ex-servicemen and sportspersons, the posts must be reverted and filled from among the candidates of the SC category as per the directions of the welfare department.
SC commission chairman Rajesh Bagha said here that the commission had received numerous complaints that instead of filling the vacancies reserved for the sub-quota as per the guidelines of various departments, it was generally preferred to keep the posts vacant, which resulted in injustice to the SC category candidates.
He said it had also come to the notice of the commission that some departments were not filling the backlog of the SC category reservation, leading to an unwarranted situation of the posts reserved for the SC category remaining vacant.
Bagha further said that the commission had given written instructions to the state government, according to which the notifications issued by the welfare department from time to time should be implemented in letter and in spirit.
