DC bans classes at coaching centres from 8am to 3pm
15 Jun 2017
Chandigarh

CHANDIGARH: Two years after a failed attempt to restrict coaching institutes in Chandigarh from taking classes during school hours, deputy commissioner (DC) Ajit Balaji Joshi said on Wednesday that no coaching institute will be allowed to render its services to schoolchildren between 8am and 3pm, for 60 days.

The order will be effective from July 1 to August 29.

The DC has also imposed Section 144 of the CrPC in this regard.

Joshi has reframed a two-yearold circular, issued by the then DC, and has pointed out that private coaching institutes are involved in the business of giving tuitions to schoolchildren. He further added that their tuition timings clash with those of schools. This deters students from attending school, he added.

“It has come to our notice that coaching centres are preventing children from attending school. It has also been noticed that teachers of several government and private schools are hands in glove (with the coaching institutes),” reads the circular issued by the DC on Wednesday.

Joshi has ordered that all private coaching institutes, within the jurisdiction of Chandigarh, shall not render coaching to schoolchildren from 8am to 3pm in “public interest” for a period of 60 days. No explanation was provided on why the period has been fixed to 60 days. However, students who have already appeared in final exams or have passed schoolleaving examination are exempted from this.

The order will come into force from July 1 and will be effective till August 29.

Ananya Ganguly, a city-based teacher who takes Chemistry lessons at a coaching institute said, “Most coaching institutes do not take classes during school hours. We don’t want students to be deprived of school education. We only take classes for the droppers batch.”

Meanwhile, Swan Singh Kamboj, president of the educational employees union said, “Imposing Section 144 of the CrPC is for the betterment of Class 11 and 12 students in government schools.”

“The union demands that private tuitions should be banned between 8am and 3pm. Police and UT officials should carry out surprise checks in coaching institutes,” he added.
