SANGRUR: The Umeed Foundation on Monday distributed bicycles among 233 students of class VIII and X who had secured first, second and third position in their class. The students were drawn from all the government schools of the Sangrur assembly segment. Speaking on the occasion, Arvind Khanna, the chairman Umeed Foundation and the general secretary attached to Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee President Capt Amarinder Singh, said that the purpose was to encourage the students and also provide them means of transportation to reach their schools. He hoped that this will also inspire other students and they will also work hard to score good marks. He said, the Umeed was also doing an exercise at screening the meritorious and outstanding students, who want to study but are restrained by economic conditions of the family, so that they could be provided financial aid to continue their studies. The Umeed is already sponsoring ten such students who have scored 90 per cent and above marks. Khanna said, Umeed has been doing the social work in the area for last 14 years. While providing healthcare to the remote rural areas was the primary task, it has also helped people in getting employment. The Umeed Mahila Manch has provided jobs to over seven thousand women while 500 youth have also got employment. Earlier talking to reporters, he said, once Congress forms the government and Capt Amarinder Singh becomes the Chief Minister, he will ensure that the District Hospital in Sangrur works properly and everybody visiting there gets proper medical treatment. Replying to a question whether it was in reaction to a similar scheme being carried out by the government, he said, he has been doing the social work for the last fourteen years. ' '  '"Distributing the bicycles is only one part of our social welfare work' '  ' , he said, while adding, there are so many other things the Umeed Foundation has been doing.
