Schools’ affiliation at risk if teachers not sent for training: CBSE

CHANDIGARH : In a recent circular the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced that a school’s extension for affiliation will now also depend on whether it is regularly nominating its teachers for training programs.

The board has set up seven centres of excellence across the country to train school teachers. For teachers in Chandigarh, the CBSE regional office in Sector 5, Panchkula, is the training centre.

According to the Right to Education (RTE) Act, 2009, teachers are to be provided training by government or local authority to enhance the quality of education. However, the CBSE has noticed that most schools fail to nominate their teachers for these training programs.

Rule 3.3(h)(vi)of CBSE’s affiliation bylaws says, “Every school should organise at least one-week long training programme for teachers every year in association with any teachers training institute recognised by the state or Central government or by any agency identified by the CBSE.”

In the circular issued by the board, deputy secretary (affiliation), Jaiprakash Chaturvedi, said, “The proposal for extension of provisional affiliation of the school(s) will be considered with reference to the school’s record of nominating its teachers for training as per the provisions of affiliation bylaws.”

Speaking on the development, Arvind Rana, president of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan Teachers Welfare Association, said, “Most schools nominate the same teachers every year for these trainings. They should rather nominate those teachers who have yet not received any training.” He added, “The training programmes should not be organised during examination periods as students will suffer because of it. September and March are the ideal months for such trainings.”HTC
