Free tablets for Goa school students

Wednesday, March, 13 2013 -newsline

VELGUEM: Free tablet computers would be distributed to students of Class 5 and 6 in the next academic year, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said here Wednesday.

Parrikar was speaking at a public function at Velguem, a village located 40 km from the state capital Panaji.

"The process of registration has already begun," said Parrikar, who was the first chief minister in the country to distribute free computers to school students in his first stint as the state's chief minister in 2002.

"The tablets will be loaded with e-contents in terms of curriculum and students can also log in for educational content from other sources," Parrikar said, adding that such an exercise would help the students learn more.

Over 50,000 special tablets with e-learning packages have already been ordered by the Goa government, which is also insisting on a no-objection certificate from the parents before distribution of the tablets.

"It is a no-objection-certificate saying they are OK with us giving them the computers," according to deputy director of the education department Anil Powar.

The parents should also be in a position to guide the students into logging into the right websites, Powar said.

Goa schools to have wi-fi in 4 months: Parrikar

Thursday, April, 04 2013 newsline

PANAJI: All schools in Goa would be made wi-fi enabled within months, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar told the state assembly Thursday.

Parrikar was speaking during the question hour. The budget session of the Goa assembly is currently on.

"Most schools will have wi-fi within three to four months, so that when the students get their free notebook computers, they can be used to the fullest," Parrikar said.

The Goa government has already announced that notebook computers would be given free to Class V and VI students from the next academic year.

All the notebooks, Parrikar said, will be preloaded with interactive educational software and would cost below Rs.10,000.

"This is only an initial estimate. But all the computers will have an interactive educational software which will help students to understand lessons taught in class better," said Parrikar, who is also the state education minister.

Parrikar was the first chief minister in the country to distribute free computers to school students. He did it in his first stint at the helm of the state government in 2002.
