SANGRUR: A unit of the PRTC Workers' Union burnt the effigy of the SAD government in front of Sangrur depot's gate for doing injustice to unemployed linemen and their families on January 13 during Maghi Mela in Muktsar. The linemen and their families were staging a protest at the mela in support of their demands due to which a 1.5-year-old boy and a small girl Harshirat Kaur are lodged inside Faridkot jail for no fault of theirs.
Leader of the union Harwinder Singh, Gurpal Singh, Kala Singh, Harjinder Singh stated that unemployed linemen are protesting to get jobs for about 4000 linemen who are unemployed at the moment in the powercom.
They stated that on the direction of the SAD government, the police manhandled linemen and their families during the protests at the Maghi Mela. False charges were leveled against the families of linemen and they were sent to jail.
It should be noted that these linemen have been on a protest since long and they are demanding jobs for themselves. The government, despite protests, at various places, has not paid heed to any of the demands put up by linemen. The Maghi Mela episode happened because the government thought that the protest done by linemen was 'disrupting' the speech delivered by chief minister of Punjab Parkash Singh Badal.
While talking about PRTC, Tasmer Singh and Rupinder Singh from the union stated that a meeting has been conducted with the managing director of the PRTC regarding the demands of PRTC employees. But the management is following an anti-workers policy. The union has warned the management that if their demands are not met then there will a chaka jaam throughout the state.
